Digital Marketing: The Untold Truth

Today, the whole world seems to be digitized.

Everyone talks about the importance of being digital.

From your bank account to your new truck, everything seems manageable with an app on your phone.

It seems to be a reality involving everyone on this planet, so much so that you get at least one email a day inviting you to try XYZ Agency's digital marketing services.

Or if not an email, you get a call inviting you to try the new digital lead generation service XYZ company offers.

Yet the true reality is quite different.

Especially when it comes to marketing.

As I have reiterated in many articles, digital marketing does not exist.

Yes, you read that correctly: it does NOT EXIST.

Marketing as a science is not digital or analog. It indeed uses digital or analog tools, but those tools are tied to where your target audience is. 

Because it's hard to go and buy fish at the butcher's, it is usually easier to find meat.

That's why anyone who approaches you today about digital marketing is already disqualifying themselves as marketers. Sure, he's great at delivering your message on digital platforms, but if your target audience isn't there, who is your message reaching?

No one.

That's why I want to reiterate how important it is before you take any marketing action to understand where your target audience is.

Any action you take without knowing where your market stands risks consuming a budget you could use to produce results.

I know many people will tell you:

- But they are all on Facebook;

- they're all on Twitter;

- everyone is using Google;

- everybody uses Bing...

Everyone is not your target audience.

Even if you collect municipal solid waste, there will only be a few people interested in your service. And your marketing should find them and talk to them.
