Hospital Waste: The Hidden Treasure

May 20, 20224 min read

Discover what I learned about waste while at the hospital. As a waste management company owner, what you should do to save the planet and increase your turnover

In the past 2 weeks, unfortunately for me, I was an inpatient in the hospital after an urgent surgery. Surgery that creates some other problems locking me in the hospital bed for 12 days.

Fortunately, now everything is going in the right direction and since yesterday afternoon I’m at home.

But I’m not here to tell you about my health problems, I’m here to tell you what I learned while staying in the hospital bed.

In fact, I watched carefully the management of the waste.

My brain cannot stop even under antibiotics and opioids to stop the pain.

As surely you know inside the hospital there are two types of waste:

– municipal solid waste that originates from daily life;

– biohazard waste originates from all the activities connected with medications, surgeries, blood exams, and more.

These two types of waste should follow two different ways of management inside and outside of the hospital.

One offers the possibility of recovering secondary raw materials like plastics, paper, glass, etc, and the other, following national and international regulations, it’s subjected to be burned to avoid the biohazard risk.

Seeing what I’ve just written it seems a simple and easy process to follow but there is a problem.

A problem that I discovered staying inside and seeing the mismanagement of waste.

Yes, mismanagement.

Indeed I’ve described to you the ideal situation where municipal solid waste is segregated from biological waste.

But what happens if they are put together?

They are burned!

Yes. No one segregated them because the people that collect them said that they are risky.

When I listened to that I was without any word.

They are wasting tons and tons of precious resources due to the wrong approach.

In fact, the first point that I saw is that in the hospital rooms there is no waste segregation and all the municipal solid waste is collected in a single black big bag.

Yes, a single black big bag.

Terrible.

Why don’t put separate box collectors for the different types of waste as in our houses?

But let me tell you that the terrible part is coming.

In fact, the hazardous waste bag was close to the black one.

Ok, the color was different but unfortunately people used it in the same way, disposing of every type of waste over the hazardous one disposed of by nurses and doctors.

Believe I spent my days inside observing that.

It was terrible.

I know that probably it seems that I’m exaggerating but let me explain why it’s terrible.

Think for one moment about what really happens to put all together these types of waste.

First of all, bacterias find the most fertile medium to proliferate transforming every single bag into a biological bomb.

But if that is not so sufficient, think about what will happen if this bag is lost from the truck during its transportation. Suppose what happens if it is dispersed on land or close to a river.

Well, it risks contaminating the area destroying fauna and flora in the function of the types of bacteria and viruses inside.

I know that it could seem extreme but believe me it isn’t.

For that reason, it’s mandatory to be really careful in the management of these types of waste, and you, as a waste management company owner, should be careful.

How?

Educate your clients on the advantages of correct waste management.

In fact, if you collect the biohazard waste you should require that they put inside only this type of waste and not others. Yes because today, thanks to the evolution of pyrolysis technology, you should destroy these wastes producing energy and some resourceful materials.

I know that it’s not so diffused but that is the most important solution to apply to biohazard waste to transform something usually burned with old processes, into something valuable avoiding the biological risks.

At the same time if you collect also municipal solid waste the respect for the waste segregation offers you the advantage to collect waste that is treated and will offer you the possibility to sell secondary raw materials in the market.

Using this simple approach you’ll double the monetary returns of your company.

I know that you are now asking how can I educate my clients?

Well, there is only one tool to do it.

This tool is called Marketing and it has nothing to do with images, brochures, or social media posts.

It’s a powerful tool that needs to be well managed to educate clients and to obtain a change in terms of results for your company.
